Because most media outlets (especially those that report news) seem to create their programming based on the lowest common denominator: "American Idol", fluff news stories, etc. Anything that requires critical thinking on the part of the viewer is cast off. This is why I get nearly all of my news from the BBC America and LinkTV; they do not pander to the lowest common denominator.
