there are electrical heater mats made specifically for pets that stay outside. a solar heating system is just too complicated for a dog house, especially as there may be too little sun on winter days and none at night. i made an insulated ‘cat house’ for feral cats in my neighbourhood.

if you do use a heater mat, follow it’s instructions carefully. leave unheated floor space is case your pooch is too warm.

Your dog does not need a solar heated house. His coat will provide all the insulation he needs to keep warm. The doghouse only needs to keep him dry and out of the wind. A good diet with quality food and fresh water provides the calories he needs to make body heat. Don’t make the house too air tight. It needs air circulation to keep it dry. Otherwise the moisture from his breath will condense and the house will be wet and cold. Make the house with a flat roof. The dog will enjoy hanging out there to get off the ground and still be able to see what is going on around him.
