A little hut. Pine bedding. Chew toys. Water bowl. Food dish. Excercise wheel.
* they love toilet tissue tubes to chew on and run thru

The only real necessities are food, water, bedding, and shelter. The rest are just perks for them. You can provide a wheel for running, any type of shelter is just fine for them…mine really liked empty toilet paper rolls, cotton balls or the fluff for them to stick in their nests, salt licks, ladders, wood for them to chew on which you can buy at any store that sells pet supplies. Other than that, anything safe you can find that you think that it (or you) would enjoy in its cage is great. They do say to stay away from a lot of the yougurt covered treats and sugary treats, even tho they will eat them just fine…they’re just not the best for them. Hope this gives you some ideas.

hi there! i have a LH syrian n sure hope 2 help…
1st of all, NEVER house 2 syrians together. They are solitary animals n may fight each other to death. please dun believe in myths that say they will get lonely, u r not at home, blah, blah, blah… …..
ok, here goes:
1. buy d largest cage u can possibly afford, a 2 feet tank, say above 15 gallons, or a huge zoozone habitat is a great choice!
**NO round habitats please, as hamsters need corners 2 store their food, pee, sleep… they NEED the corners.
2. get a gd water bottle, it doesnt have to be big 2 b good. anything bout 100-150ml is sufficient. do buy smthing w twin ball bearings, not w some spring mechanism. preferably a metal spout, so dat hammie will not chew on it. thus, avoid glass n plastic spouts.
**please change the water at least every other 2-3 days, hopefully, if u can, daily.
3. an exercise wheel that does NOt have rungs, has a flat running surface and is 8" or more in circumference. Wild Sanko silent wheel (21cm), Comfort wheel (8.5"), Wodent wheels (8") are all great choices.
4. if yr syrian is not a choosy eater, u can alwaz have mixed food, brands like Harry Hamster, Vitakraft, JR Farm are all good. But if he/ she is choosy, u may want 2 consider d ‘all-in-one’ pellets. A small serving of vegetables, legumes, fresh corn, are also recommened.
**remember to avoid dried corn n feed with Ethoxyquin
it is a controversial preservative n found in many low quality feeds for small and larger animals alike. i recommend not using a feed containing ethoxyquin, to be safe.
5. provide some ‘toys’, like wood chews, tunnels… paper rolls…
6. bedding – Carefresh, v v v absorbent, is highly recommended. you could also use aspen wood shavings, kitchen towels to line some areas.
**NEVER use newspaper, d ink may poison yr hammy!!
please avoid pine shavings too.
if u shud ever nid more info, u may wan 2 consider 2 join tis hammie forum… c u there! =)

good health, happiness & joy to yr syrian n u!! =)

First, remember that bigger is better for cages. Cramped hamsters can become paralyzed if they don’t get out for exercise. Also, the smaller their territory, the more likely they will become aggressive in defending it. Consider investing in a playpen, for some fresh air runaround time each night. My hams both FLIP OUT for playtime!!
Paper based bedding is cleaner, more efficient, and safer than any sort of wood bedding. Red cedar is incredibly dangerous, but even pine contains oils that can kill a hamster, and at the very least make it uncomfortable and shorten the lifespan. I recommend UNSCENTED Yesterday’s News (YN) cat litter (same thing as their small animal litter, but cheaper), Carefresh, or cellsorb. I personally use the YN and then carefresh in the nesting/digging area.
A wheel is an absolute must. Most hamsters jump on it like they were born to ride it! If it’s metal, touch a tiny dot of olive oil or veg oil to the axel whenever it squeeks. If it’s a plastic wheel, hit that thing with some nature’s miracle every once in a while to get the pee off!
A pet-safe hiding place is important. I like to give several, but it depends on cage-space. Wood needs to be tossed out if it gets urinated on, for health reasons. Plastic home needs to be cleaned periodically.
Any hamster-safe pet store wood chews are fine. I prefer the little round shaped ones, because sometimes they perch on the big square ones and go poop.
My ham LOVES the seesaw. I had a wooden one, but I recently got the SuperPet Puzzle Playground Seesaw and he really goes nuts for it. I don’t keep it in the cage; he plays with it in the playpen bc it takes up too much space and doesn’t seesaw as well with bedding beneath it.
Try some small wooden bird ladders. Hamsters really enjoy doing pull-ups and climbing and tumbling for fun.
I would also recommend you stay away from the homes made entirely of plastic tubes and connectors. They don’t provide enough ventilation, they’re a PIA to clean, and they can chew through and escape! Try a really big, long tank like a 30 breeder with a screen top and locks, or one of those really really big cages (the biggest you can afford- it’s worth it to see your little ham so happy!)
Two small water bottles (about 4 oz). You use one each day, wash thoroughly with soap and hot water, and leave to air-dry until the next day. Contaminated water (it grows microorganisms very quickly) is a big killer for hamsters, and a major cause of wettail. Throw out your bottles every 6 mos. They’re cheap and it’s worth it. I try to get see-through bottles and not colored, so I know what’s going on in there. Big bottles are bad, because owners become tempted to leave it be for a few days!
Last, but not least (actually I recommend you buy this before anything else) you’ll need a recently published book on hamsters as pets. I recommend Baron’s book on hamsters. It’s affordable, available in just about every pet chain and large book retailer, and it’s easy to understand. Plus, it’ll probably save you from at least one really expensive vet visit
Please feel free to email if you need anything clarified or have any other ham-questions!
