Which musician should I be on stage?

Author: admin  |  Category: Staging Courses

Let’s say I knew how to play guitar, bass, keyboard, and drums. And I had entire original songs recorded, to be played back while I performed with a single instrument on stage. Of course I’d be singing at the same time too.

Which instrument should I play? And why?

This is all hypothetical of course. ; )

Really it should be what you do best in. But uhh, generally speaking, it’s hard to drum and sing at the same time, which is why you don’t see any Drum Singers around. Bass is hard to play and sing at the same time, as some bass licks can get rather complex. You can do rhythm guitar. Lead guitar is doable, but like bass it can get hard. Key Board is good too, but it’s visually not as cool nowadays. It worked for something corporate and panic, so yea. there you go.

i would say drums or bass

if a single guitar player is playing a gutiar solo in a club it he will not get that much attention "normal"(non musicians) people wont care about it. you thought in a bass line or drum beat and people turn around and start listening

An example of a singer-drummer would be Phil Collins.
An example of a singer-bassist would be Sting.
An example of a singer-pianist would be Elton John.
An example of a singer-lead guitarist would be Jack White.
An example of a singer who doesn’t play any instruments would be Robert Plant.
And then there are singers like Jethro Tull who play flute or other instruments.

There are many examples of singers who play rhythm guitar (just about all do at some point.)

Practically: if you sing while playing drums or keyboard, you will be limited on stage with how you can move. For example, Trent Reznor (singer-keyboard) will typically play keys for a couple of songs, then sing without playing the keys so as to interact with the audience.

Singing while playing bass or lead guitar is more difficult, but it can be done with a lot of practice. Paul McCartney used to sing and play bass a lot; now that he’s older and his reflexes are slowing down a bit, he doesn’t play while singing as much.

Hence, the popularity of the rhythm-guitar / singer combination. So if you’re truly undecided, watch some concert videos of the above artists and see whose stage presence and stage act inspires you the most.
