PostHeaderIcon shed building plans and permit?

Well I plan on Building a Shed in the back yard. I will need a permit but where can I get information on baltimore city permits for sheds and all the safey codes etc? there are power lines above the area we plan to build and also a pole holding the lines close by. And if you are the type of person to compete for best answer you can provide a link to a simple plans for a shed. something along the lines of 16×16 very plain no fancy stuff. Thanks for the help!

call the city that you live in ..they should be able to give you all the info you need..or tell you where to get permits & where the permit office is you can explain what you have inmind to them…good luck….

PostHeaderIcon How do I get free plans on building a 10 x 14 gambrel storage shed?

We are wanting to build a shed ourselves but would like some plans so that we know what specific supplies we need. It needs to have a Gambrel (barn style) roof, and we are putting it on cemented in post.

Try googling Mother Earth, not sure of actual URL address. Or, use either google or yahoo with search words How to build storage sheds.

As with other answer, you can usually find the materials and some very basic printout plans you would need by going to a big box home improvement center to the building materials department and looking for the Design It Yourself kiosk. That is a computer that asks you what you want to do then guides you along its program.

The Mother Earth thing is a holdover from the old days when you could buy the Mother Earth catalog, which was chock full of a wildly varying type of subjects and articles. It was a valuable source of information back then. Am not sure they still publish the catalog, but do think they may have converted to a magazine of sorts. In any case, the site does have lots of testimonials and how to articles, you just have to search.

Finally, your library reference section should have books you can check out that will do two things–first is show you all the various sheds you might like to try out then buy the plans, second are some books on actually how to do it and what materials you will need.

Good luck. BTW, Wikipedia does have similar material and you might find something there too.

PostHeaderIcon Allowed to build a shed on yard?

State: California
County: Los Angeles
Zip: 90502

Do I need a permit to build a shed on the backyard if Im the homeowner? The County people are being vague and unhelpful. I dont think they know, or they dont want to tell because they want to wait till its done so they can give us a fine, like that Married With Children episode when Al builds that dog house.

If you can not get an answer and it is not too expensive I would just get the permit and be done with it.

PostHeaderIcon Typical price of wooden garden shed?

I want a large shed – roughly 10′ x 12′ – with double doors so I can get garden furniture in and out of it. What is the typical price of a good quality shed this size (installed) please?

I would say between $800 and $1,000 depending on style and materials. Best process is to choose one already built and then have it delivered to your site. Your site must be easily accessed by delivery truck. They usually slide them off of the delivery truck.
By choosing one already built you get to see exactly what it looks like. If your site has limited access, you can still pick out your building from a model and then have it built on site.’
This will cost a few hundred dollars more.

PostHeaderIcon Why don’t the bottom of wooden garden sheds rot?

I was watching a video of someone constructing a shed.

If a shed has a dirt floor, wooden floor, or a concrete floor- what stops the wood that meets the ground, or the wood that meets the concrete from rotting within a year? I know the wood is chemically treated- but that will only take it so far.

You said it, the wood is pressure treated. You are also correct, all wood, even treated, will deteriorate in time, but that time is greatly extended with treatment. When I build, I isolate the wood from direct ground contact when possible. That is usually done using concrete. Nothing is 100% over time.
