Small Shed Plans – Use Shed Kits or Build from Scratch?

Are you wanting to build a shed and are considering using small shed plans, but don’t know if you should use shed kits that are on the market or just build from scratch?

For a novice builder, you have to determine what is best for you. Second, what is the purpose of the shed?  Do you want it to store tools. Is it a garden shed.  Consider all of the options and consider where is the best place to locate it and determine if you really know how to build one from scratch.

Third, make sure you know what materials are required to construct the shed.  If you don’t have plans, then make your own.  Can you calculate the amount of lumber that you need. What about the hardware, nails, glue and miscellaneous items that are needed.  It is better to know before hand what material you will need and gather them at your construction site.  You don’t want to have to run to the hardware store or lumber yard overtime that you determent that you are short material.

However, if you want to be more confident in your choice, then use small shed plans as a guide to construct your shed.  You could even find shed kits that provide one with prefabricate items.  You just put them together.  Usually, all of the material that you need comes with the kit.  This is the simplest approach to building a shed.

Another approach that is simple is to use small shed plans and purchase the material yourself.  Using this method, you know what you will end up with since the plans have been used by many others.  In most all cases, you will find instructions that guide you along the way.  It will tell you which section to start with first.  You will see how to secure the sections together and eve what it shoal look like when your are finished with that section.

You are not restricted to style because of your building knowledge.  These kits and plans provide sturdy, durable and in most cases, maintenance free structures.  

When using shed plans, there are no hidden costs.  You see what you get ahead of time and do not have to purchase additional items.

Of course, you can always customize any shed by putting your own touches on it.  Put your own accessories and windows on it and make it your own.

Wood Shed Building Kits

I had to replace my lawnmower this summer.  I do not have a garage so I just put it under a tree with a bucket over the motor during the winter.  Not a great idea, but the wife would not let me put it in the dining room so what was I to do?

A friend suggested I build a shed to store my tools in and I told him I could never afford to buy one and would not even attempt to build one myself.

My friend said if I bought one he would help me put it together.  He also told me how happy my wife would be that my shovel would no longer find its home leaning against the bathroom window or the old engine that I would one day do something with could finally be stored away from the neighbor’s site.

Funny my neighbor mentioned the engine!  Anyway, I decided to give it a shot and started looking around for wood shed building kits.  There were some at the local home and garden shop but I picked one I found online and had it shipped to the house.
The kit had everything I needed and me and my buddy had it put together in a couple of weekends.  I could not convince him to help me paint it so if you do this project yourself you need to understand that all the kits come unfinished so you will have to paint it.

I do not like painting so I paid a guy to do it and when I did the math, I saved hundreds of dollars over a pre-built shed and actually enjoyed putting it together.  The project gave me a great sense of accomplishment and the shed is a welcome addition to our backyard.

Question by Ratty Fan: My cat lost one of its eyebrows?? Is he okay?
My 4-5 month old kitten has recently (within the last couple of days) lost the couple of whiskers that go over his left eye, and only has one whisker over the other eye. Otherwise he seems fine, but what is going on? Is he just shedding “whisker over eye” hairs, or what?

Note: He does tend to slide (we have a wood floor) into things occasionally when he’s chasing them, maybe that could cause it??
I know cats don’t have eyebrows. They’re not really eyebrows, they are the little whisker hairs that cats have just above their eyes. What I was saying is that my kitty is losing his, and I was wondering why. ..
